2015 Prefontaine Classic Seeks Sustainability Certification for Social and Environmental Initiatives

The Council for Responsible Sport (Council) is a non-profit organization that supports, certifies and celebrates socially and environmentally responsible events. The Council offers direct support to event organizers to create measurable goals for reaching sustainability certification in five key areas: Planning, Procurement, Resource Management, Access & Equity and Community Legacy.

The Prefontaine Classic is committed to hosting a world-class event and becoming the first IAAF Diamond League event to achieve certification from the Council; if earned, the Prefontaine Classic will join the ranks of over 100 certified responsible events, including the U.S. Olympic Track and Field and Marathon Trials in 2012, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon and the AT&T Pro-Am PGA golf tournament at Pebble Beach, among others.

The Prefontaine Classic is aiming to reduce waste sent to the landfill from the event and will have a crew separating recyclable and compostable items from trash. University of Oregon Catering Services will provide food and beverages for the meet and will prioritize purchases that support Oregon farms and other local businesses. The meet will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources through EWEB’s Greenpower program.

In order to increase the positive social impacts of the event, a High School Elite Mile field is included for the first time in 2015, placing the stars of American Track and Field next to their heroes at Historic Hayward Field. Additionally, the Prefontaine Classic seeks to include the broader Eugene Community by charging no fee for entrance to the event on Friday evening, May 28th. The act is intended to reduce barriers for locals to get out and enjoy the weather, the sport and the excitement of an elite running event. The Prefontaine Classic begins 7:50p Friday, May 28th, with the last event of the meet occurring Saturday, May 29th at 2:49p with the ‘Men’s Bowerman Mile’.
