Oregon Track Club Officials

The mission of the Oregon Track Club is to support track and field in our community. Becoming an official at University of Oregon track and field meets is one important way to become involved in the organization and this exciting sport.

Overview
For over six decades Oregon Track Club has recruited, oriented, and trained officials for UO and other track and field meets at Hayward Field such as youth, high school and masters meets, as well as the Prefontaine Classic and collegiate and post-collegiate national championships.  Each February OTC officials and those interested in becoming officials have an informational meeting for the upcoming track and field season.

Job Description
Volunteers are introduced to various officiating tasks. These include horizontal jumps (long jump, triple jump), vertical jumps (pole vault, high jump), throws (shot put, discus, javelin, hammer), wind gauge, starter, weights and measures, field communications, electronic results, electronic measurement, Finish Lynx timing, clerks, umpires, and marshals. Ideally new officials will attend a training clinic before indicating which event or position they wish to work.

Expectations
All officials are encouraged to become members of the Oregon Track Club (OTC), USA Track & Field (USATF) and be certified as track and field officials.  To find out about the levels of officiating, clinics and fees visit: <http://oregon.usatf.org/Resources/Officials.aspx>.

OTC Officials are asked to officiate University of Oregon track and field home meets each spring, the OSAA State High School Championships and the Hayward Classic for Masters athletes.  As they become eligible they may work the Prefontaine Classic and, if selected, national and international meets held at Hayward Field.  Additionally, there are many officiating opportunities during the summer at OTC's All Comers' meets.

Uniform requirements for UO track and field meets are khaki colored pants, shorts, or skirts, white polo shirt, and white shoes and socks. Hats and rain gear are also encouraged when needed.

Perks
Some Hayward Field meets provide shirts and/or hats to wear for that competition. Food is often provided to OTC officials working through meal times. Officials earn waterproof raingear by working three consecutive years.  The Prefontaine Classic is awarded to those officials who demonstrate commitment and competency throughout each track season.
